Back in school, to own a MP3 with trance electro music was the coolest thing. If one had an iPod they were automatically perceived as the most privileged among their friends. That’s how the brand positioning of Apple products has always been. A mark of fine taste, premium and privilege.

When Apple announced the discontinuation of the iPod this week, a lot of the Gen-Z, including me, were hit by a large measure of nostalgia. What was created as a gift from Steve Jobs to his daughter after saying, “I'm gonna put music in your pocket. 100 songs. 1000 songs. 500 songs...”, went on to win the hearts of many young Gen-Z.

While the brand also communicated that the product would be available only till the ‘supplies last’, I am not sure how many die hard Apple fans would invest in a product nearing its sell-by date.

Apple Music Event 2001-The First Ever iPod Introduction To flip back the pages, iPod wasn't the first MP3 player in the market but dominated the space because of its patented 'look and feel of an Apple product' which made it a crowd-puller.

Back in the early 2000s, illegal music downloading and sharing from websites had created a major need for official music platforms. As always, Apple rose to the occasion. They came out with iTunes and it acted as a catalyst for iPod’s success.

As a company that always thinks two steps ahead, Apple knew iPod wouldn’t dominate the market for long because ideally it couldn’t perform a lot of functions that a phone could. Over the years, the iPod got replaced by the iPh1.

What was inevitable to take place since years, has taken place now in 2022.

Well, keeping the business talk aside, it's always too hard to see a childhood memory become non-existent one fine morning. The image of listening to music on an iPod while travelling back from school in the bus still holds a special place in many hearts.

And now it's time to say ‘Adios amigos’.
